THE RETURN OF LEYVA MANCILLA
ABOVE THE TOWN OF ZIHUATANEJO IN GUERRERO, MEXICO
ARE THE SIERRA MADRE DEL SUR MOUNTAINS
Back in the 1960's a fisherman by the name of Caesar Galeana Sortiz left the coast in search of better work. He eyed the mountain range behind him - these are the foothills between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains. Sortiz knew that coffee was popular further south in Oaxaca, and saw opportunity to bring coffee home.

Within a few years Caesar and a handful of his neighbors would make the 12 hour hike up to tend to their new fincas, staying up there for weeks at a time, having to make-do with local resources for food, water and shelter.

Those who lasted later brought their families, who in turn moved up-mountain full-time. Now the third generation of farmers is there - standing right alongside the first and second.

Today these farming families cal themselves Cafeticultores Leyva Mancilla.

Our relationship with Leyva Mancilla is young but deep. In 2012 these farmers heard we were in Mexico and drove half a day to introduce themselves. In 2013 we worked with Leyva Mancilla to set them up as an independent exporter, and purchased Guerrero's first ever direct export to the US.  In 2014 we invited a group of roasters down to expand much needed drying capacity for their natural-processed coffee, 'Oro Natural'.  We built over 50 raised beds and provided materials for many more.

And now in 2015 we present the pride of Guerrero, Leyva Mancilla's very own - Oro Natural.

Good coffee comes from good people. We believe that everyone - the farmer, exporter, importer, roaster and barista - everyone adds value to the the final experience. We believe that the best way to get the best coffee is to invest in the people who help to make coffee special. We believe in the power of relationships. We believe we that coffee builds relationships, that trade with meaning can educate your customers and engage your staff. We believe that roasters and farmers both want the same things out of their coffee, and that we all win by being the best customers we can be that to the best farmers we can find.
